The first written reference about the village is from the year 1377, when it was separated from the district of Liptovský Ján and owned by the Svätojánsky family. The surroundings of Závažná Poruba are rich on ruins of many small castles and fortified settlements. The highest one is located in Poludnica at the altitude of 1550 m. In this submontane village, you can find a neo-gothic church and a chapel of St. Lucas from the year 1837.
Závažná Poruba is situated in the Low Tatras region 5 km from the city of Liptovský Mikuláš, in the middle part of a beautiful Liptovská Basin (Liptovská kotlina). The village is at the altitude 634 m at the north-eastern foot of the hill Poludnica (1548 m). Each visitor should ascend to the top of this mountain because it offers such a nice view at the northern as well as southern side of the Low Tatras mountains and the whole Liptovská Basin, including of the water reservoir Liptovská Mara.
Liptovská Mara offers facilities for swimming, boating and surfing. The biggest all year open areal of water entertainment Aquapark Tatralandia is also very close.
You can visit an open-air museum in Pribylina with original wooden houses, a manor house and a church transported from the local villages that were flooded by the waters of Liptovská Mara. You can go there by bike or by car, as it is only 25 km far.
On the foreland of the Predná Poludnica mountain right above the village a new ski resort Opalisko was open recently. It will satisfy skilled skiers as well as beginners. A ski slope begins at the altitude 1230 m. In the surroundings, there are also many opportunities for cross-country skiing.
