The settlement Magurka with the altitude 1050 m is the highest settlement in Slovakia situated right below the main ridge of the Low Tatras mountains, in a picturesque environment of the Ľupčianska Valley (Ľupčianska dolina), close to the hills Latiborská hoľa, Ďurková and Chabenec. The village consists of log houses lined in one single street, as the settlement lies freely in the terrain.
The village Magurka was founded already in the 14. century as a result of a growing mining industry. Administratively it belongs to the town of Partizánska Ľupča. Gold mining industry started here in 1250. During the reign of Marie Therese the gold mining industry was in the hands of state. Due to significant deposits of gold and other metals, the settlement Magurka had a very important position in the whole Austrian-Ungarian monarchy at that time. In the “Kunsthistorische museum” in Vienna, in the collection of minerals you can see a unique sample of gold marked as “Magurka Ungarn”. In a museum in Budapest, you also can see 8 kg nugget of pure gold originally coming from Magurka. During blooming times of the local gold mining industry before World War I, about 25 kg of gold was mined on average each year. A small chapel of miners is exceptionally precious. You can find there a huge rattle (used for calling miners in the morning and for announcing the end of a working day) was very well preserved until presen
    t day.
Magurka is a suitable starting point for the hikes to the Latiborská Hill (Latiborská hoľa), which is 1648 m high., Ďurková 1749 m, Chabenec 1955 m, and also you can walk to the mountain village Donovaly.
In the winter we recommend cross-country skiing from Magurka to Liptovská Lúžna and back (16 km), or from Magurka to Partizánska Ľupča and back (25 km). If there is enough snow then skilled skiers can try to ascend to the main mountain ridge and visit a shelter below the top of Chabenec peak.

NOTE: This village administratively belongs to the town of Partizánska Ľupča.
